Teach Your Curriculum Using Environmental Themes

Grade 3

Grade 3 unit plans The GEOEC is pleased to provide the following integrated themes that you can use to teach your curriculum in an environmental context. The documents are provided “as is” in Microsoft Word format to facilitate their use by teachers. These unit plans are living documents – please send your feedback to info@geoec.org.

 

Theme 1 - Living in Other Places

3-10 Describe the appearances and life cycles of some common animals, and identify their adaptations to different environments

3.2 Global Citizenship - recognize how their actions might affect people elsewhere in the world and how the actions of others might affect them (C, GC)

    Theme 2 - Listening to Nature

    Sounds of natural communities

    Curriculum links for this unit:

    Science Unit D: Hearing and Sound
    9. Compare the range of hearing in humans to that in other animals; e.g., dogs and bats
    13. Explain the role that sound plays in communication.

    Social Studies: Connecting with the world
    There is no obvious link to this unit other than listening and appreciating different communities in the natural environment and comparing this with natural communities around the world.

    Theme 3 - Depending on Others

    Endangered species and life cycles

    Curriculum links for this unit:

    Science Unit A: Rocks and Minerals
    Describe ways in which rocks break down to become soil, and demonstrate one or more of these ways.

    Science Unit E: Animal Life Cycles
    8. Identify examples of environmental conditions that may threaten animal survival, and identify examples of extinct animals.
    9. Recognize that habitat preservation can help maintain animal populations, and identify ways that student actions can assist habitat preservation.
