Keynote Address

The Signature of the Whole: Radical Interconnectedness in Education

Friday (6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.)
Speaker: Dr. David Selby

Interdependence and interconnectedness now occupy a central place in environmental and global education, but have we taken our understanding and explanation of these concepts far enough? Are they sufficient to convey emerging ideas of nature with us in the world? We will explore the implications of “radical interconnectedness” for learning and the dynamics of learning communities.

Dr. David Edward Selby is Professor of Education and Director of the International Institute for Global Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto, Canada. He was previously (1982 - 92) Director of the Centre for Global Education at the University of York, England. He is an international authority on global, environmental, humane and human rights education.

Professor Selby has lectured and facilitated workshops and seminars on global education and related fields all over the world. He is an authority for various United Nations organizations. He has written extensively on global education.

Keynote Speaker

Topic: How to be King of Infinite Space

Saturday (6:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m.)
Speaker: Peter Lee

Like Shakespeare’s Hamlet, who said, “I could be bound in a nutshell and still count myself king of infinite space,” being concerned for a balanced Earth is not a dreary endeavour, taking action is not an onerous task, doing little is not a guilty sentence, and living in a world of disappearing environmental options is not being bound in a nutshell. What some environmentalists do when the nutshell gets smaller and smaller is the topic of Peter Lee’s dinner address.

Peter Lee is Regional Director for World Wildlife Fund Canada. He is a biologist with over 25 years experience in conservation issues and wilderness management and teaches at the University of Alberta.
