Conference 2010

Save the date for the annual GEOEC conference: Creating A Legacy Together: A Conference for Global Citizenship, May 6-8, 2010, Canmore, Alberta! The GEOEC has partnered with several other groups to bring you this conference and keynote speakers:
- Chris Turner, author of The Geography of Hope: A Tour of the World We Need
- Craig Kielburger, founder of Free the Children
- Geoff Green, adventurer, educator, and founder of Students On Ice.
Teachers and educators from the non-formal sector are invited to attend this conference. The workshops on Friday will focus on promising practices for developing engaged global citizens, and help you improve your practice individually; then on Saturday well work together to see what we can do collectively to change the system to optimize global citizenship and environmental education.

Friday, May 7th
Craig Kielburger keynote, workshops, and banquet with Geoff Green
Saturday, May 8th
A full-day participatory session: The future of global and environmental education in Alberta – creating an Action Plan. Following a brief plenary in the morning (the Education Minister David Hancock has been invited to address the group), you will work in small professionally facilitated groups to generate a plan to advance global and environmental education.
Saturday will end with a party and dance celebration featuring the fabulous band TR3!

Keynote Speakers

Chris Turner is the author of the national bestseller The Geography of Hope: A Tour of the World We Need, which the Globe and Mail named one of the best books of the year. Turner is also the author of the international bestseller Planet Simpson: How A Cartoon Masterpiece Documented an Era and Defined a Generation. Craig Kielburger is founder of (Kids Can) Free the Children, the worlds most influential international childrens organization with thousands of young people from more than 35 countries who participate in its activities. Among its many accomplishments, Free the Children has helped raise funds for the construction of more than 300 primary schools, portable water projects and health clinics and the distribution of medical supplies to families. Geoff Green is a 40-year-old Canadian entrepreneur, adventurer and educator who has been leading expeditions and adventures from pole to pole for the past decade. A former school teacher, Green has skippered yachts; taught skiing in the Swiss Alps; was the first person to water-ski in both the polar regions; has been through the Northwest Passage three times; and led the largest ever expedition to Antarctica during the Millennium.
